Facing a critical shortage of volunteers, the Northern Tazewell Fire Protection District in Illinois has decided to cease operations after 75 years and contract with neighboring departments for its services. The all-volunteer district, which has seen its membership dwindle from 40 members to just eight, will have its service area covered by the Washington and East Peoria fire departments effective May 1.
District trustees cited the inability to reliably answer calls as the primary reason for the change, noting that only one volunteer is available during the day and some emergency calls have had no one respond. Trustee Tom Bessler stated that efforts to recruit new members through various channels have been unsuccessful. The decision was framed as a necessary move to ensure community safety.
Under the new arrangement, calls will be divided geographically between the two departments. The district's fire station is expected to be sold, and its fire engines and other equipment will likely be transferred to Washington and East Peoria to cover the initial cost of services. Trustees do not anticipate a negative impact on response times, as the district already relied on mutual aid from these departments for many calls.
